Email and SMS are your most reliable tools for turning first-time patients into loyal ones, because they reach people who already know your clinic. The trick is to send fewer, better messages tied to each patient's treatment journey: a welcome, aftercare support, a rebooking nudge and a win-back. Done on a consent-first basis, this lifecycle messaging keeps patients returning while staying on the right side of UK marketing rules.

Why consent-first email and SMS keep patients returning

Direct messaging reaches patients you already have a relationship with, which is why it usually outperforms cold advertising for repeat bookings. Unlike a social post that competes with everything else in a feed, a well-timed aftercare or rebooking message lands in a personal inbox at the moment it matters. The aim is not volume but relevance: send only what a patient would genuinely want, based on where they are in their treatment journey.

The four lifecycle campaigns every clinic needs

Four campaigns cover most of the value. A welcome message sets expectations and introduces your clinic after someone first books or consents. Aftercare messages support recovery and reduce anxiety in the days following a treatment, while rebooking reminders prompt patients to return when a result is due to fade (for example, three to four months after a wrinkle-relaxing treatment). Win-back messages gently re-engage patients who have not returned in six to twelve months.

UK marketing consent rules: PECR, GDPR and the soft opt-in

In the UK, direct marketing by email and text is governed by PECR alongside UK GDPR, and SMS is treated the same as email. As a general rule you need consent before marketing to individuals, but the soft opt-in may apply where someone is an existing patient who obtained a similar service, provided you offered a clear way to opt out when you collected their details and in every message since. Keep records of how and when consent was given, and never buy or rent patient lists. This is general guidance, not legal advice: check the ICO's current direct marketing guidance for your clinic.

Building your list and measuring what works

Build your list from genuine interactions such as bookings, consultations and enquiry forms, using a plain-English consent statement rather than pre-ticked boxes. Segment by treatment and recency so a rebooking reminder only reaches the people it applies to. Include a working unsubscribe or STOP option in every message and honour it promptly. Track opens, clicks and unsubscribes, but above all track rebookings, so you can see which messages actually bring patients back.

Common questions

Do I need consent to send marketing emails to patients in the UK?
Usually yes. Under PECR you generally need consent to send marketing emails or texts to individuals, though the soft opt-in may let you message existing patients about similar services if you gave them a clear way to opt out. Keep clear records and check current ICO guidance.
What is the difference between email and SMS marketing for clinics?
Legally they are treated the same under UK rules, so both need consent or a valid soft opt-in and an easy opt-out. In practice, SMS suits short, time-sensitive prompts like aftercare or appointment reminders, while email suits richer content such as welcome sequences and win-back offers.
